Program Focus

Our Philosophy is that young children learn from play. They learn everything they need to know to function in the world while engaging in play. Their play is quite purposeful. It is to a child what the scientific method is to a researcher. Play is critical to all aspects of a child's development. It is often overlooked by parents as a valuable tool. Here is list of play's value:
Outlet for energy Exploration
Rehearses real life situations
Works out strong feelings
Develops concentration and coordination
Teaches all kinds of skills
Teaches how to solve problems
Teaches creativity
Teaches how to get along with both children and adults
Develops confidence in one's ability*

When children engage in play supported by appropriate materials, in a safe, stimulating, and supervised environment, they are receiving the very best that preschool can offer. We strive to carry out this philosophy every day.

Our school follows the Curriculum Frameworks for Preschools created by the Massachusetts Department of Education. We prepare children for future learning by training them to be thinkers. We work to accomplish pre-kindergarten readiness skills. We enhance literacy by reading to each child every day and encouraging reading at home. We practice each day self-help skills, attentiveness, and group behavior so that each child is prepared for the next step on his educational journey. Each child is unique and has a unique learning style. Teachers set goals for each child according to that learning style. The daily schedule is a careful balance of active and restful times, including frequent use of our outdoor facilities. .

Discipline is built around the principles of safety and respect. All children learn best when they know that they are safe. Children learn to be respectful of the rights and property of others. They learn to use materials in a purposeful way. We teach the values that are so important to families and out in the world. If a child is challenged, we look to find positive ways to help him or her achieve these goals.

"Our two daughters have blossomed under the care at Whittemore House. Both made many friends. Our older daughter was well-prepared for kindergarten. Our younger daughter is looking forward to two more years at Whittemore House."
